Mango Pickle

… we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” –  Mother Teresa

Everyone in our family agrees that my cousin, Ammadu makes the best mango pickle in the family. Last month I was there when she was making it.

Ammadu doesn’t make the pickle all by herself. They are a team of four friends who make it together – one is an expert in selecting the right mangoes – size, sourness and the thickness of the skin;  another one is extremely patient in grinding the mustard seed into fine powder (a clumsy grinding could heat up the grinding machine and make the powder bitter). Another friend of hers among the team brings sesame oil, extracted from the finest sesame seeds that grow in her sister-in-law’s fields. My cousin herself collects the best red chillies from our uncle’s farm for the chilly-powder. With all the fine ingredients in the right proportion the pickle tastes wonderful.

Just like fine ingredients make a tasty pickle, contribution of each skilful individual  to a certain idea or project will result in a great outcome.
